Origin & History

The American English Coonhound traces its lineage to European foxhounds and hunting dogs, carefully developed in the American South into the ultimate versatile hunting companion. These athletic hounds, with their distinctive 'bawl' vocalizations were bred to excel at tracking and treeing raccoons Bred for their endurance and stamina, they would track their prey all night, through rough terrain. They are equally adept at pursuing foxes, cougars, and bears.

First recognized by the AKC in 2011, the breed's signature redtick coat pattern - though other color variations exist - serves as immediate visual identification of its hunting pedigree. What makes these coonhounds truly exceptional is their dual nature: intensely focused and stubborn when following a scent trail, yet transforming into mellow, affectionate companions when home from the hunt.

Their strong work ethic and resonant voice present challenges for inexperienced owners. These hounds thrive when given proper outlets for their athleticism and scenting abilities. .
