Find Your Perfect Breed

Comprehensive Dog Breed Directory

Golden Retrievers

Pickyourpooch directory is designed to help you make an informed decision when choosing your next four-legged family member. The right breed match creates happier homes and reduces the number of dogs surrendered to shelters due to incompatible lifestyles.

This directory comprises the current 201 American Kennel Club (AKC) listed breeds, as well as the 187 breeds listed with the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). If the breed is listed as 'Rare' in popularity, it is CKC registered, and not yet registered with the AKC.

Although this is a purebred directory, we advocate for adopting from local shelters, where many wonderful mixed-breed (and purebred) dogs await a second chance. These dogs are often victims of circumstance, not behavior. Choosing the right dog is crucial, so be honest about your lifestyle. Select a dog whose energy matches yours, and if you're a novice, opt for a trainable, "beginner-friendly" breed, as opposed to an "independent" one, to ensure a successful partnership.

Year after year, beloved breeds such as the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, and French Bulldog maintain their coveted spots among the most popular. Their enduring appeal is no mystery; these dogs are typically easy to train, wonderfully adaptable family companions, and gentle with other pets, making them an excellent choice for the vast majority of first-time and experienced owners alike.

While appearance often draws us to certain breeds, temperament and energy levels are far more important for long-term compatibility. Our goal is to help you look beyond aesthetics, to find a dog whose natural instincts align with your daily life. With over 200 breeds to choose from, you are sure to find a match!

Understanding Breed Characteristics

Breeds developed to work closely with humans (like herding dogs) typically train more easily than independent working breeds (like livestock guardians). A Siberian Husky's boundless energy won't disappear just because you prefer quiet evenings, nor will a Great Pyrenees abandon its protective instincts.

The secret to canine happiness lies in honoring their nature while finding one that complements yours. Let us help you make that perfect match.
