American Hairless Terrier
AKC Terrier Group
Origin & History
The American Hairless Terrier originated in 1972 when a hairless puppy named Josephine was born in a litter of Rat Terriers in Louisiana. Breeders Edwin and Willie Scott recognized this genetic mutation's potential and began developing it as a distinct breed, creating the first intentionally bred hairless terriers in the United States.
Unlike other hairless breeds, the American Hairless Terrier's hairlessness comes from a different genetic mechanism (recessive gene rather than dominant). The breed remains one of the few hairless breeds developed in America. A coated variety exists to maintain genetic diversity.
Today, these lively terriers are prized as companions for allergy sufferers, known for their playful personality and unique hairless appearance that requires special skin care.
