American Water Spaniel
AKC & CKC Sporting Group
Origin & History
The American Water Spaniel originated in the Great Lakes region of the United States during the 19th century, developed by hunters who needed a versatile gun dog that could work both land and water. This all-American breed was specifically created to retrieve waterfowl from boats and flush game from dense cover, combining traits from Irish Water Spaniels, Curly-Coated Retrievers, and possibly the now-extinct English Water Spaniel.
Wisconsin claims the breed as its own, where it became particularly popular among market hunters who needed a compact dog that could work from small skiffs. It remains one of the more rare American breeds, with only about 3,000 specimens existing worldwide today.
While still an excellent hunting companion, the American Water Spaniel has also proven itself as an affectionate family pet and competitor in various dog sports, maintaining its reputation as a rugged, intelligent all-purpose sporting dog.
