Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog
CKC Herding Group
Origin & History
The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog is one of Australia's oldest working breeds, developed in the early 19th century to drive cattle across vast distances in harsh conditions. Unlike the Australian Cattle Dog, the Stumpy Tail has a natural bobtail and a leaner build.
Bred from Smithfield dogs crossed with dingoes, then later with imported British herding dogs, the Stumpy Tail was prized for its endurance and ability to work silently. Nearly extinct in the 20th century, dedicated breeders preserved this unique Australian working dog.
Today, Stumpy Tails remain excellent working dogs while also competing in dog sports and serving as loyal companions.
