Azawakh
Sahel Sighthound
AKC & CKC Hound Group
Origin & History
The Azawakh is an ancient sighthound breed originating from the Sahel region of West Africa, particularly the Azawakh Valley. Developed by the Tuareg nomads, these dogs were bred to:
- Hunt gazelle and hare in harsh desert conditions
- Serve as guardians of nomadic camps
- Withstand extreme temperatures with minimal resources
Living in close companionship with their human families for thousands of years, Azawakhs were highly valued by nomadic tribes. The breed was first exported from Africa in the 1970s and recognized by the AKC in 2019. These elegant hounds remain rare but are prized for their fierce loyalty and breathtaking speed.
