Berger Picard
AKC & CKC Herding Group
Origin & History
The Berger Picard (Picardy Shepherd) is one of France's oldest herding breeds, dating back to the 9th century. This rustic working dog originated in the Picardy region of northern France, where it was used to herd sheep and cattle.
Nearly extinct after both World Wars, the breed was saved by dedicated enthusiasts. The Berger Picard gained full AKC recognition in 2015, though it remains one of the rarest dog breeds in the world with only about 400 in North America.
Known for its distinctive tousled coat and expressive eyebrows, the Berger Picard remains a versatile farm dog while gaining popularity as an active companion for experienced owners.
