Bluetick Coonhound
AKC Hound Group
Origin & History
The Bluetick Coonhound originated in Louisiana in the early 20th century, developed from French hounds brought by settlers and English Foxhounds. Breeders wanted a cold-nosed hound that could track game over long distances, resulting in this distinctive blue-mottled dog with incredible scenting ability. The breed gets its name from its dark blue coat pattern that appears to be "ticked" with black spots.
Originally classified with English Coonhounds, Blueticks were recognized as a separate breed in 1946. They became the official state dog of Tennessee in 2019. These determined hunters were bred to track and "tree" raccoons but can hunt anything from squirrels to bears.
Today, while still exceptional hunting companions, Blueticks are gaining popularity as loyal family pets known for their melodious bay and easygoing nature.
