Bull Terrier
AKC & CKC Terrier Group
Origin & History
The Bull Terrier was developed in 19th century England through crosses between Bulldogs and various terriers, originally bred for dog fighting. James Hinks of Birmingham refined the breed in the 1850s to create the distinctive all-white "gentleman's companion" version we know today.
Known as the "gladiator of the canine world" for its muscular build and distinctive egg-shaped head, the Bull Terrier later gained popularity as a companion dog. The colored varieties were reintroduced in the early 20th century.
Famous as the "Target dog" in advertising and as General Patton's wartime companion, Bull Terriers combine clownish humor with courageous determination. Despite their fighting ancestry, properly bred and socialized Bull Terriers make loyal family pets.
