Cesky Terrier
AKC & CKC Terrier Group
Origin & History
The Cesky Terrier is a relatively new breed developed in Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) in 1948 by geneticist František Horák. Seeking to create the perfect hunting terrier, he crossed Scottish Terriers with Sealyham Terriers to produce these unique characteristics:
- Long, silky coat that's easier to maintain than other terriers
- Calmer temperament suitable for family life
- Short legs ideal for going to ground after quarry
Originally bred to hunt foxes and badgers in Bohemian forests, Cesky Terriers were carefully developed to be less excitable than typical terriers while maintaining strong hunting instincts. The breed was recognized by the FCI in 1963 and the AKC in 2011.
Today, they remain one of the rarest terrier breeds, cherished for their affectionate nature and distinctive appearance that combines elegance with working-dog sturdiness.
