Origin & History

The Clumber Spaniel is one of the oldest spaniel breeds, developed in France and perfected in England during the 18th century. They were favored by British nobility, particularly the Duke of Newcastle at Clumber Park (from which they take their name). These dogs were bred as slow-moving, methodical hunters capable of working all day in dense cover.

Clumbers were prized for their excellent nose, stamina, and ability to flush game for hunters. Unlike other spaniels, they were bred to work more deliberately, making them excellent for hunting in thick underbrush.

Today, while still used as hunting companions, Clumber Spaniels are primarily family pets known for their gentle, affectionate nature and distinctive rolling gait.
