Origin & History

The English Toy Spaniel, also known as the King Charles Spaniel (in the UK), has a royal history dating back to 16th century England. These small spaniels were favorites of British royalty, particularly King Charles II who gave the breed his name. Paintings from the Renaissance period often depict these dogs in the laps of noblewomen.

Developed as companion dogs, they were bred down from larger spaniels to create perfect lap warmers. The breed nearly disappeared in the late 19th century but was revived by dedicated breeders. Today, they remain relatively rare but are cherished for their sweet temperament and beautiful silky coats.

Recognized by the AKC in 1886, the English Toy Spaniel continues to be a loving companion, though often confused with the similar Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (a separate breed).
