Field Spaniel

Origin & History

The Field Spaniel originated in 19th century England as a distinct breed from the Cocker Spaniel, developed to be a medium-sized, all-black hunting dog. Breeders crossed Sussex Spaniels, English Water Spaniels, and possibly Basset Hounds to create this specialized gun dog.

Nearly extinct by the mid-20th century due to unpopular breeding choices that made them too heavy for fieldwork, dedicated enthusiasts revived the breed by crossing them with English Springer Spaniels. This restored their athleticism while maintaining their distinctive long, low silhouette.

Field Spaniels remain rare but are prized for their gentle temperament and excellent hunting abilities in dense cover. They combine the best traits of spaniels in a uniquely elegant package.
