Finnish Lapphund
AKC & CKC Herding Group
Origin & History
The Finnish Lapphund originated with the semi-nomadic Sami people of Lapland, who used these versatile dogs for herding reindeer. One of Finland's oldest breeds, they were essential for survival in the harsh Arctic climate. The breed's ancestors accompanied the Sami for centuries as they migrated with their reindeer herds across northern Scandinavia.
In the mid-20th century, the breed was refined and standardized. While still used for reindeer herding in northern Finland, most Finnish Lapphunds today are family companions. The AKC recognized the breed in 2011. Known for their "smiling" expression and thick double coat, these dogs embody the resilient spirit of the Arctic while maintaining a gentle, people-oriented temperament.
With their fox-like appearance and cheerful demeanor, Finnish Lapphunds bring a touch of Arctic magic to homes around the world.
