Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen
AKC & CKC Hound Group
Rough-Coated French Scent Hound
Origin & History
The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen is a French scenthound developed in the Vendée region to hunt rabbit and hare in dense brush. Descended from larger Griffon Vendéen hounds, this breed was specifically created to:
- Work at a slower pace than taller hounds
- Navigate thick underbrush with its low stature
- Track game with exceptional scenting ability
First recognized in the 19th century, these determined hunters remain popular in France but are rare elsewhere. Their cheerful disposition and shaggy good looks make them appealing companions for active owners who appreciate their musical voice and independent nature.
