Irish Setter
AKC & CKC Sporting Group
Origin & History
The Irish Setter originated in Ireland during the 18th century, developed from a mix of Irish Water Spaniels, English Setters, and other pointing breeds. Originally bred as a hunting dog for locating game birds, the breed's stunning mahogany coat became its trademark feature. Early Irish Setters included red-and-white dogs, but by the 19th century, the solid red variety became dominant.
These elegant dogs gained popularity both as working gun dogs and show dogs. Their athleticism and beauty made them favorites among hunters and families alike.
The Irish Setter became particularly popular in America during the 1960s after appearing in the Disney movie "Big Red."
Today, Irish Setters excel as both hunting companions and active family pets, known for their joyful personalities and boundless energy.
