Irish Terrier
AKC & CKC Terrier Group
Origin & History
The Irish Terrier, one of the oldest terrier breeds, originated in Ireland in the 19th century as an all-purpose farm dog. Known as the "Daredevil" for its courage, these fiery red dogs were bred to hunt vermin, guard property, and serve as loyal companions. Their distinctive red coat made them easily visible to hunters in the field.
Irish Terriers gained popularity as messenger dogs in World War I. They were the first terrier breed recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1880. The breed's motto "Solid as a rock, keen as a hawk" reflects their temperament.
Today, while still capable hunters, Irish Terriers are primarily cherished family companions known for their loyalty, intelligence, and spirited personality.
