Kerry Blue Terrier
AKC & CKC Terrier Group
Origin & History
The Kerry Blue Terrier originated in County Kerry, Ireland in the 19th century as an all-purpose farm dog. Bred to hunt small game and vermin, herd sheep and cattle, and guard the homestead, these versatile dogs were known as "the poor man's watchdog." Their distinctive blue coat develops from black puppy fur to slate-blue adult coloration.
Legend says the breed descended from a shipwrecked blue dog that swam ashore in Kerry Bay. Recognized by the Irish Kennel Club in 1922, Kerry Blues became symbols of Irish nationalism.
Today, while still capable workers, Kerry Blue Terriers excel as family companions known for their playful spirit, loyalty, and hypoallergenic coat.
