Origin & History

The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient Italian breed originating in the Romagna region, where they were originally bred as water retrievers. Their name means "lake dog from Romagna" in Italian. When marshlands were drained in the late 19th century, these intelligent dogs were repurposed for truffle hunting, using their exceptional sense of smell.

The Lagotto is the only breed specifically bred for truffle hunting. Their waterproof curly coat and enthusiastic work ethic make them excellent at this specialized task.

This rare breed nearly went extinct in the 1970s but was revived by dedicated Italian breeders who recognized its unique qualities as both a working dog and loving family companion.
