Lakeland Terrier
AKC & CKC Terrier Group
Origin & History
The Lakeland Terrier originated in England's Lake District during the 18th century, bred by farmers to protect sheep from foxes. Developed from crosses between various British terriers including the now-extinct Old English Black and Tan Terrier, these rugged little dogs were prized for their courage and working ability.
Lakelands were bred to bolt foxes from their dens so hunters could deal with them. Recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1921, they remain one of the rarest terrier breeds.
Today, while still capable working dogs, Lakeland Terriers are primarily companions valued for their cheerful personality and handsome appearance.
