Nederlandse Kooikerhondje
AKC Sporting Group
Origin & History
The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje (pronounced "nay-der-lahn-seh koy-ker-hond-jeh") is a small spaniel-type breed developed in the Netherlands as early as the 16th century. These charming dogs were bred to work in "eendenkooien" (duck traps), where they would lure ducks into nets by playfully wagging their white-tipped tails.
Nearly extinct after World War II, the breed was saved by Baroness van Hardenbroek van Ammerstol who located remaining dogs and established a breeding program.
Today, these cheerful dogs serve as both working companions and affectionate family pets, maintaining their historical role as duck decoys in some areas.
