Norrbottenspets
CKC Hound Group
Swedish Hunting Companion
Origin & History
The Norrbottenspets is an ancient Swedish spitz breed that nearly went extinct in the 1940s before being revived by dedicated breeders. This versatile hunting dog was developed to:
- Hunt small game (especially capercaillie and squirrel) in northern Sweden
- Work independently in harsh Scandinavian climates
- Alert hunters with their distinctive bark while tracking
Though still rare outside Scandinavia, the Norrbottenspets is gaining recognition for its compact size, cheerful personality, and adaptability to various hunting styles and family life.
