Norwegian Elkhound
AKC & CKC Hound Group
Origin & History
The Norwegian Elkhound is one of the oldest dog breeds, dating back to Viking times over 6,000 years ago. These hardy dogs were developed in Norway to hunt moose (called "elk" in Europe) and other large game. Their name "Elghund" in Norwegian literally means "moose dog." Vikings used them as hunting companions and guardians, and archaeological evidence shows they were buried with their owners.
This versatile hunting dog would track, corner, and hold moose at bay by barking until hunters arrived. They were also used to hunt bear, lynx, and smaller game.
Today, while still used for hunting in Scandinavia, Norwegian Elkhounds are primarily family companions valued for their loyalty and protective nature.
With their wolf-like appearance and courageous spirit, Norwegian Elkhounds embody the rugged beauty of their Scandinavian homeland.
