Rare British Water Hound
Origin & History
The Otterhound is an ancient British breed developed in medieval times to hunt otters that threatened fish stocks. This rare and distinctive hound was specifically bred to:
- Track and hunt otters in water and on land
- Work in all weather conditions with exceptional stamina
- Swim powerfully with webbed feet and waterproof coat
This breed is considered one of the rarest dog breeds. Though otter hunting was banned in England in 1978, the breed survives through dedicated enthusiasts who appreciate its shaggy charm, musical voice, and affectionate nature.
