Pekingese
AKC & CKC Toy Group
Origin & History
The Pekingese is an ancient breed dating back over 2,000 years to Imperial China, where they were revered as sacred companions to Chinese royalty. According to legend, they were created when a lion fell in love with a marmoset and Buddha shrunk the lion to the size of the marmoset while keeping its lion-like heart and courage.
These "lion dogs" lived exclusively in the Imperial Palace and were considered so valuable that stealing one was punishable by death. When British forces looted the Summer Palace in 1860, they brought several Pekingese to England, introducing the breed to the West.
Today, the Pekingese maintains its regal bearing and makes a devoted companion for those who appreciate its dignified personality and luxurious coat.
