Origin & History
The Peruvian Inca Orchid, also known as the Viringo or Peruvian Hairless Dog, is an ancient breed dating back over 3,000 years to pre-Incan civilizations in Peru. These unique dogs were highly valued by indigenous cultures and often depicted in pottery and artifacts.
A charming legend, often repeated as historical fact, tells that when the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in Peru, they discovered these unique dogs residing in chambers overflowing with orchids. At the time.ownership of the dogs was a privilege reserved exclusively for Inca nobility, who, the story goes, would only release their cherished pets under the cover of night to run beneath the moonlight. This enchanting tale is the origin of their beautiful, romantic name: the Peruvian Inca Orchid Moon-Flower Dog.
They were considered sacred animals believed to have healing properties and were often used as bed warmers for people with arthritis or other ailments due to their naturally warm skin.
Today, the Peruvian Inca Orchid is recognized as part of Peru's cultural heritage and is gaining popularity worldwide as a unique companion animal with minimal shedding.
