Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen
AKC & CKC Hound Group
Origin & History
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen (PBGV) originated in the Vendée region of France in the 16th century, bred as a rugged scenthound to hunt small game like rabbits in dense, brushy terrain. Their name translates to "small, low, wire-coated dog of the Vendée." Developed from larger Griffon Vendéen hounds, PBGVs were prized for their ability to work in packs and their distinctive rough coat that protected them from brambles.
Today, while still used for hunting in France, most PBGVs serve as cheerful companions known for their mischievous personality and shaggy good looks.
With their tousled coat and perpetual twinkle in their eyes, PBGVs embody the quintessential merry French hound spirit in a compact package.
