Origin & History

The Plott Hound is a unique American breed developed in the mountains of North Carolina by the Plott family in the 18th century. Originally bred to hunt big game, this determined hound has these key characteristics:

  • Descended from German Hanoverian Hounds brought to America in 1750
  • Bred specifically for hunting bears and wild boar
  • Official state dog of North Carolina

Known for their incredible stamina, courage, and distinctive brindle coat, Plott Hounds remain popular hunting companions today while also making loyal family pets for active owners.

  • Height:  20-25 inches
  • Weight:   40-60 pounds
  • Coat:   Short, dense, and glossy
  • Colors:   Various shades of brindle (black, brown, tan)
  • Lifespan:   12-14 years

Energy: Very high; needs vigorous daily exercise
Easy To Train: Intelligent but independent-minded
Shedding: Low to Moderate; short, smooth coat sheds less than average, but consistently
Grooming: Low maintenance; occasional brushing
Family Dog: Loyal and affectionate with family
Watchdog: Excellent; protective and alert
Beginner Friendly: Stubborn and high-energy; not ideal for first-time owners
Prey Drive: Extremely strong; bred for hunting
Barking: Frequent when tracking or excited
Good with other dogs: Generally good, but can be dog-selective
