Pointer
AKC & CKC Sporting Group
Origin & History
The Pointer originated in 17th century England, developed from Spanish Pointers and other European hunting dogs to create the ultimate bird dog. Bred to locate and "point" game birds with their distinctive stance, these dogs were prized for their exceptional scenting ability, speed, and endurance in the field.
Their precise development is unclear, but Foxhounds, Greyhounds, and Bloodhounds likely contributed to the breed. The Pointer became particularly popular with British nobility for grouse and pheasant hunting. They remain one of the most skilled hunting dogs today.
Pointers have also become beloved family pets known for their noble appearance and energetic personality.
