Portuguese Sheepdog
CKC Herding Group
Origin & History
The Portuguese Sheepdog (Cão da Serra de Aires) is an ancient herding breed from the Alentejo region of Portugal. Developed in the Serra de Aires mountains, these medium-sized dogs were bred to herd sheep, goats, and cattle in Portugal's rugged terrain.
First documented in the early 20th century, the breed nearly disappeared but was revived by dedicated Portuguese breeders. Known as the "monkey dog" for its expressive face, the Portuguese Sheepdog is highly valued for its intelligence and working ability.
Today, while still rare outside Portugal, these dogs excel in herding trials, dog sports, and as active companions.
