Redbone Coonhound
AKC Hound Group
Origin & History
The Redbone Coonhound is an all-American breed developed in the Southern United States during the late 18th century. Bred from foxhounds and other European hunting dogs, they were specifically created to track and tree raccoons, bears, and cougars. Their name comes from their rich red coat and early breeder Peter Redbone.
These athletic hounds were prized for their endurance, speed, and melodious bay that hunters could follow through dense forests. Their webbed feet make them excellent swimmers when tracking game across waterways.
Today, while still used for hunting, Redbones have gained popularity as family companions known for their gentle nature and striking appearance. They were recognized by the AKC in 2009.
