Origin & History

The Saluki is one of the oldest known dog breeds, with depictions appearing in ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to 2100 BCE. Known as the "Royal Dog of Egypt," these graceful hounds were treasured by pharaohs and nobility across the Middle East for hunting gazelles and hares across the desert. Their name comes from the ancient city of Saluk in Yemen.

Bedouin tribes considered the Saluki a sacred gift from Allah and allowed them to sleep in family tents. The breed spread along trade routes and was prized from Persia to North Africa. The AKC recognized the Saluki in 1927. Today, they remain one of the most elegant sight hounds, combining breathtaking speed with regal dignity.

With their aerodynamic build and aloof grace, Salukis embody centuries of desert hunting heritage while maintaining their aristocratic bearing.
