Origin & History

The Sealyham Terrier was developed in mid-19th century Wales by Captain John Edwardes at his Sealyham estate in Pembrokeshire. Bred to hunt badgers, otters, and foxes, these sturdy white terriers were created by crossing now-extinct English terriers with breeds like the West Highland White Terrier and possibly the Dandie Dinmont Terrier.

Once popular among British aristocracy and celebrities in the early 20th century, the breed has become increasingly rare. The Sealyham remains one of Britain's most endangered native dog breeds today.

While still capable hunters, modern Sealyhams are primarily companion animals valued for their distinctive appearance, steady temperament, and moderate size.
