Silky Terrier
AKC & CKC Toy Group
Origin & History
The Silky Terrier originated in Australia in the late 19th century through crosses between Yorkshire Terriers and Australian Terriers. Breeders aimed to create a dog with the beautiful coat of the Yorkie but the sturdier body and terrier temperament of the Australian Terrier.
Originally called the Sydney Silky, these dogs were popular companions in Australian cities. While they resemble Yorkshire Terriers, Silkies are slightly larger and have distinct terrier characteristics.
Today, the Silky Terrier is primarily a companion dog, valued for its elegant appearance, small size, and big personality.
