Skye Terrier
AKC & CKC Terrier Group
Origin & History
The Skye Terrier, one of Scotland's oldest terrier breeds, originated on the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands. This elegant yet hardy dog was developed to hunt foxes, badgers, and otters in the rugged island terrain. Unlike shorter-legged terriers, the Skye's long body and flowing coat provided protection from harsh weather and predator bites.
Skye Terriers gained royal fame when they became favored companions of Queen Victoria in the 19th century. Their dignified appearance and loyal nature made them status symbols among British nobility. The breed's most famous member, Greyfriars Bobby, became legendary for guarding his owner's grave for 14 years in Edinburgh.
Today, the Skye Terrier is considered a vulnerable native breed in the UK, with only about 30-40 puppies registered annually. They are cherished for their devotion, courage, and distinctive silhouette featuring a long, low body and profuse double coat.
