Origin & History

The Sloughi (pronounced SLOO-ghee) is a graceful yet powerful sighthound, originating in the arid regions of North Africa—primarily Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. This ancient breed carries centuries of desert heritage in its sleek silhouette.

Developed by Berber and Bedouin tribes, Sloughis were meticulously bred to excel as:

  • Elite desert hunters: Mastering pursuit of hare, fox, and gazelle across shifting sands
  • Stealth specialists: Moving with silent precision to capture prey
  • Multipurpose partners: Serving as both vigilant guardians and devoted companions

With lineage dating to antiquity, Sloughis faced near extinction during 19th-20th century colonial rule.

Though still uncommon, the breed gained AKC recognition in 2016, introducing more enthusiasts to their combination of athleticism, quiet dignity, and striking desert beauty.
