Spanish Water Dog
AKC & CKC Herding Group
Origin & History
The Spanish Water Dog (Perro de Agua Español) is an ancient breed from Spain, dating back to at least the Middle Ages. Originally bred as an all-purpose working dog, they were used for herding livestock, retrieving waterfowl, and assisting fishermen along Spain's coasts and inland waterways.
Their distinctive curly, woolly coat served as protection from harsh weather and cold water. The breed was nearly forgotten in the 20th century but was revived by Spanish breeders in the 1970s. Recognized by the AKC in 2015, Spanish Water Dogs remain relatively rare outside of Spain but are gaining popularity as versatile working dogs and companions.
Known for their intelligence and trainability, these dogs excel in herding, water work, agility, and as therapy dogs while maintaining their strong working instincts.
