Origin & History

The Spinone Italiano is an ancient Italian breed dating back to at least 500 BC, making it one of the oldest gun dogs in existence. Developed in the Piedmont region of Italy, these rugged dogs were bred to hunt in diverse terrain - from mountains to marshes - with their distinctive slow but methodical working style.

Their name comes from "pino," referring to the thorny underbrush they were known to penetrate while hunting. Nearly extinct after World War II, dedicated breeders revived the Spinone, preserving its unique characteristics. They remains Italy's premier all-purpose hunting dog.

Today, while still exceptional hunters, Spinoni are increasingly valued as gentle family companions known for their patient nature and distinctive wiry coat.
