Sussex Spaniel
AKC & CKC Sporting Group
Origin & History
The Sussex Spaniel originated in the county of Sussex, England in the late 18th century, making it one of the oldest spaniel breeds. Developed as a field spaniel for hunting in the dense underbrush of the Sussex countryside, these dogs were prized for their ability to work slowly and methodically, allowing hunters to keep pace on foot.
Their distinctive golden liver color and melodious voice made them favorites among English gentry. Nearly extinct after World War II, the breed was saved by dedicated enthusiasts and remains one of the rarest spaniels today.
While still capable hunting companions, most Sussex Spaniels today serve as affectionate family pets, maintaining their characteristic cheerful expression and deliberate pace that originally made them ideal for the shooting sports of the English countryside.
