Swedish Vallhund
AKC & CKC Herding Group
Origin & History
The Swedish Vallhund, also called "Västgötaspets," dates back over 1,000 years to Viking times. These sturdy herding dogs accompanied Vikings on their journeys and were used to herd cattle, hunt vermin, and guard homesteads. Their name translates to "herding dog of the West Goths," referring to the Swedish region where they originated.
By the 1940s, the breed nearly became extinct but was revived by Swedish breeders Björn von Rosen and K.G. Zettersten. The AKC recognized the Swedish Vallhund in 2007. Today, while still used for herding in Scandinavia, most serve as energetic companions and excel in dog sports like agility and obedience.
With their wolf-like appearance and cheerful demeanor, Swedish Vallhunds embody the spirit of their Viking ancestors while making excellent modern companions.
