Treeing Walker Coonhound
AKC Hound Group
Origin & History
The Treeing Walker Coonhound originated in the United States in the 19th century, developed from Walker Foxhounds and other hunting dogs. Named after Thomas Walker who imported English Foxhounds to Virginia in 1742, the breed was refined to specialize in "treeing" raccoons and other game.
These hounds were prized for their speed, endurance, and distinctive "bugle" voice that hunters could follow through dense forests. Their tricolor coat provided visibility in low light conditions. Treeing Walkers remain one of America's most popular coonhounds.
Today, while still used for hunting, Treeing Walkers are increasingly valued as companion animals for active families who appreciate their friendly nature and musical baying.
