Welsh Springer Spaniel
AKC & CKC Sporting Group
Origin & History
The Welsh Springer Spaniel is an ancient breed dating back to Renaissance Wales, where they were prized as versatile hunting dogs. Originally known as the "Welsh Cocker" or "Welsh Starter," these spaniels were bred to "spring" game (flush birds from brush) for hunters.
While similar to English Springer Spaniels, the Welsh variety developed separately in Wales and was recognized as a distinct breed in the early 20th century. Their rich red and white coat made them highly visible in the Welsh countryside. Though nearly extinct after World War II, dedicated breeders preserved the lineage.
Today, Welsh Springer Spaniels excel as both hunting companions and family pets, valued for their cheerful disposition and beautiful coloring.
