American Foxhound
AKC & CKC Hound Group
Origin & History
The American Foxhound is one of America's oldest native breeds, developed in the 1700s from English Foxhounds brought by early settlers. George Washington himself helped refine the breed for:
- Speed and endurance to cover vast American landscapes
- A distinctive, musical "baying" voice for hunters to follow
- Lighter build than English cousins for greater agility
Unlike pack-focused English Foxhounds, American Foxhounds often work in smaller groups or solo, reflecting the needs of American hunters. Their independent nature and love of running make them challenging but rewarding companions for active owners.
Today, they remain popular hunting dogs but are increasingly valued as family pets for those who can meet their exercise needs.
