Origin & History

The English Foxhound is one of the oldest British hunting breeds, developed in the 16th century for fox hunting in packs. These dogs were bred for:

  • Exceptional stamina to run for miles alongside horses
  • Keen scenting ability to track foxes
  • Social temperament to work harmoniously in large packs

Unlike terriers bred to "go to ground," foxhounds are scent hounds that chase prey above ground. Their deep chests and long legs are built for endurance, not burrowing.

Today, English Foxhounds are still used in traditional hunts (where legal) and thrive in rural settings with space to run. They are gentle, sociable, and vocal—true pack animals at heart.
