Bergamasco Sheepdog (Shepherd)
AKC & CKC Herding Group
Origin & History
The Bergamasco Sheepdog (also called 'Bergamasco Shepherd' in Europe), originated in the Italian Alps as a herding dog for sheep and cattle. This ancient breed dates back thousands of years, descending from dogs brought to Europe by Phoenician traders.
Named after the Bergamo region of Italy, these dogs were bred to withstand harsh mountain conditions while managing flocks independently. Their distinctive coat developed as protection against predators and extreme weather.
While still used as working dogs in some areas, Bergamascos are now primarily companion animals valued for their intelligence, calm demeanor, and unique appearance.
