Origin & History

One of Scotland's oldest terrier breeds, the Cairn Terrier originated in the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye. Their name comes from their traditional use in hunting vermin among cairns - the man-made piles of stones used as landmarks or memorials.

These hardy little dogs gained fame as the breed that played Toto in The Wizard of Oz. Cairn Terriers maintain their working instincts while adapting well to family life. .

Originally grouped with other Scottish terriers, the Cairn was established as a separate breed to preserve its unique characteristics. Today they remain popular as both working terriers and cheerful companions.
