Coton de Tuléar
AKC & CKC Non-Sporting Group
Origin & History
The Coton de Tuléar was the cherished companion of Malagasy nobility in Madagascar. Commoners were forbidden from owning these dogs, earning them the nickname "Royal Dog of Madagascar." Their name comes from their cotton-like coat and the port city of Tuléar where they were discovered by Europeans.
They remain rare but have gained popularity as delightful companion dogs. Their name means "cotton of Tuléar" in French, perfectly describing their soft, fluffy appearance.
Today, Cotons excel as therapy dogs and family companions, bringing joy with their clownish antics and affectionate nature. They maintain their aristocratic elegance while being wonderfully adaptable to various living situations.
