Harrier
AKC & CKC Hound Group
English Hunting Hound
Origin & History
The Harrier is a medium-sized scent hound developed in England to hunt hare in packs. Dating back to the 13th century, these determined hounds were bred to:
- Work in large packs to pursue hare across open country
- Cover great distances at a steady pace
- Follow scent trails with remarkable endurance
Smaller than an English Foxhound but larger than a Beagle, Harriers were favored by hunting enthusiasts for their stamina and musical voice. While still used for hunting in some areas, they also make energetic companions for active families who can meet their exercise needs.
