Origin & History

The Ibizan Hound is an ancient breed originating from the Spanish island of Ibiza, with roots tracing back over 5,000 years to Egypt. These elegant hunters were developed to:

  • Hunt rabbits and small game in rocky terrain
  • Work independently using sight, scent and hearing
  • Jump extraordinarily high to flush prey

Ibizan Hounds are a 3-way hunter and hunt via sight, hearing and scent. Caution is advised with smaller pets as they have an innate instinct to hunt especially when that smaller pet is moving fast.

Ibizan Hounds nearly disappeared in the 20th century but were preserved by dedicated breeders. Today they remain rare outside Spain but are gaining popularity as athletic companions for active families who appreciate their cat-like grace and quiet dignity.
