Irish Red and White Setter
Sporting Group
Origin & History
The Irish Red and White Setter is the original Irish setter, dating back to the 17th century in Ireland. These elegant gundogs were developed as working bird dogs, prized for their ability to locate and "set" game birds for hunters. Nearly extinct by the 20th century due to the popularity of the solid red Irish Setter, dedicated breeders preserved this historic variety.
Recognized by the AKC in 2009, the Irish Red and White Setter maintains its working abilities while serving as an affectionate companion. The breed's distinctive coat pattern - deep red patches on a white background - provided camouflage in the field while making the dogs visible to hunters.
Today, these setters excel in field trials and dog sports while forming devoted bonds with active families who appreciate their gentle nature and working heritage.
